The Manache Ganpati — and why the order matters

Five Pune mandals hold man — honour, precedence. The order below is not a ranking of popularity; it is a fixed sequence, settled in the early years of the public festival, that governs the visarjan procession. On Anant Chaturdashi the miravnuk cannot set off until Kasba Ganpati, the gramdaivat of Pune, leaves its temple, and the other four follow in turn.

Every other mandal in the city — including Dagdusheth, which draws far larger crowds than most of the five — falls in behind them.

Manache Ganpati, in order

  1. 1

    Kasba Ganpati

Kasba Peth · est. 1893

The gramdaivat — the presiding deity of Pune — and first in the order of precedence. The visarjan procession cannot begin until Kasba Ganpati sets out.

  2. 2

    Tambdi Jogeshwari Ganpati

Budhwar Peth · est. 1893

Second in precedence, attached to the Tambdi Jogeshwari temple, one of Pune’s oldest.

  3. 3

    Guruji Talim Ganpati

Ganpati Chowk, Laxmi Road · est. 1887

Third in precedence, and older than the public festival itself. Founded jointly by Hindu and Muslim families — a point the mandal still marks.

  4. 4

    Tulshibaug Ganpati

Tulshibaug · est. 1901

Fourth in precedence, known for its tall idol and for early adoption of fibreglass murti work.

  5. 5

    Kesariwada Ganpati

Narayan Peth · est. 1894

Fifth in precedence, at the Kesari Wada — Lokmanya Tilak’s home and the paper he founded. The public Ganeshotsav as a mass movement traces to here.

Other Pune mandals worth the walk

  • Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati

    Live darshan

Budhwar Peth · est. 1893

Pune’s most visited Ganpati and the one most people mean by "Pune darshan". Open year round, not only during the festival.

  • Akhil Mandai Mandal

Mandai · est. 1893

Known for an elaborate annual set piece rather than a fixed idol.

  • Hutatma Babu Genu Mandal

Ganesh Peth

Long known for large themed tableaux drawing on current events.

  • Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati

Budhwar Peth · est. 1892

Widely held to be the first public (sarvajanik) Ganeshotsav mandal, predating Tilak’s call by a year. The original wooden idol is still installed.

Before you set out

Darshan hours, aarti times and mandap entrances change from year to year, and the mandals publish them only days beforehand. We have deliberately left them off this page rather than print last year's and send you across the city for nothing. Check the mandal's own announcement close to the date.

The peth areas — Budhwar, Kasba, Ganesh, Narayan — are effectively pedestrian through the festival. Parking near Laxmi Road is not realistic; come in by transit and walk.
